Time to Rebalance

Spring has never been my favorite season. In fact, it competes with winter for the “least favorite season” spot. But this year, I looked up what the spring equinox is all about. I figured if I was going to dislike it, I should at least know more about what it represents. Its meaning gave me pause and I’m now reconsidering my position. With everything going on in the world and here at home right now, I need to take some time to rebalance. Maybe you do, too.

Balance in light and darkness

According to the Farmer’s Almanac, the spring and fall equinoxes are the two times per year when daylight and darkness are in equal balance. I didn’t know that. What I did know was that it’s a time marked by many cultures and religions for renewal and rebirth. Flowers emerge, the smell of the air changes, and there are signs of nature waking up everywhere.

But I hadn’t given much thought to the balancing part for whatever reason. Instead, I focused on what I didn’t like about spring, which was always how much rain there is. (I know rain is good and necessary, and that I’m fortunate to live in a place that gets enough of it. Doesn’t stop me from disliking it.) And when we lived on a farm, rain meant mud. Tons and tons and tons of mud. It clung to EVERYTHING–boots, paws, hooves, fur, feathers, kids, and everything else you can think of. My dislike of spring and rain was deepened every time I lost a boot to the stuff.

We sold the farm (literally) in 2021 and I enjoy a significantly less muddy life now. Perhaps that’s why I was ready to appreciate what else spring brings.

Spring peepers are serenading me loudly as I write this.

My window is open and the air smells like the earth, full of promise.

My kid is outside working on a car, comfortable in just a t-shirt.

I’m thoroughly enjoying driving home at the end of the day in daylight.

It’s essential to my sanity.

The world feels very heavy, and honestly, pretty scary to my LGBTQ+ family. Lots of uncertainty and feelings of helplessness going around. I’ve been living with growing fear and concern for weeks now. It’s exhausting. Time to rebalance some things, both at work and outside of it. Things like…

Where I choose to focus my energy and attention.

How much news, social media, and information I choose to consume daily.

Which relationships I lean into and which ones I take a break from.

Where could you benefit from some rebalancing in your life and work right now? And if you did that, how would it help you? We all control what we choose to give our time, attention, and energy to in our lives every single day. Choose wisely, friends. And rebalance when needed. It’s the perfect time of year for it.
